My paintings

Welcome to my website.

I first became aware of the possibility of learning to draw and paint while on holiday in Provence but then I was working full time so only recently have I been able to spend time on what has in the past few years become a passion. I have attended courses and workshops over the years but am mainly self taught.

A few years ago however, I was lucky enough through a chance meeting with Val Pettifer - a very successful local artist - to be introduced by her to two drawing societies in my area, both of which hold workshops and demonstrations and exhibitions regularly. With enormous encouragement and mentoring from Val I have exhibited my paintings with success. Currently, I'm trying my hand at Chinese brush painting.

I love using pastels and oils but also enjoy the sheer crazy creativeness of mixed media where quite literally anything goes. In fact the imagination can run riot not only on the composition and components which make the collage interesting and come alive, but also and most particularly on the colours. Clashing colours and irridescent inks are the order of the day. I have recently done a pastel painting of a little dog who I'm particularly fond of and as a result of that I'm now offering an animal portrait option for any pet owners out there who would like a lasting momento of a beloved dog or cat.

Contemporary artists who I particularly admire and who inspire me are Soraya French for her stunning and vibrant use of colour, Mike Bernard for his imaginative collages, Hashim Akib who paints wonderfully and brilliantly with a loaded brush of colour mixed straight on the canvas. Susan Isaacs paints with a palette knife laying paint on thick and I also like the colours and techniques used by Sylvia Paul.

I love the atmospheric oil paintings of Fabian Perez. Shirley Valentine Daines portrays scenes from modern life and is particularly brilliant at the depiction of sunlight on her subjects whether children at the beach or fashionable ladies at the races. For water colour it would be hard to beat Hazel Soan - she is truly outstanding.

So here is a selection of my paintings which I hope you will enjoy looking at as much as I enjoyed painting.
